Comm 130- Montage Project

Jessica Chatterton-P4Montage-Temple

An inspirational montage made by the blending of two or more images, and the use of typography.

The process of this project started with sketching out my ideas. I had a few ideas but this one ended up being my favorite. After I created a simple sketch, I went to the internet and chose two photos that fit my design. I masked the Photo of the girl and then used a blending mode called lighten. I next started to put my text into the design, but realized the space was to open to I added the cloud photo. To get the text to stand out from the clouds, I used the Dodge and Burn tool to lighten and darken the layer behind the text.

The message is to Always keep the temple in your sights.

The Audience would be more geared to anyone who hasn’t gone through the temple, especially the youth of the church.

The top thing I learned was how to used the Dodge and Burn tools.

The filter I used was “sharpen” and I applied it to the photo of the girl.

My color scheme is monochromatic: Black and White

COMM130- Photodesign Project

P3-JessicaChatterton

The description of this photo was to demonstrate good photography and image editing skills while incorporating color into a poster layout with original photo.

The process in making this project started with making a plan. I wanted a bright color scheme for my project, so I purchased lemons, limes, and a grapefruit. I took a bunch of photos of the fruit on a slate background next to a large window in my apartment. After I picked the photo I wanted, I put the photo into photoshop and changed the levels while doing this, brightened the background. I also used the selective color tool to brighten the colors in the fruit. After this, I added the text, color description, and design elements in the right corner.

My message was to create a fun poster that would bring a smile to anyone’s face. I chose the citrus fruit because of their bright colors, and tangy taste to portray a happy mood.

My audience is really anyone. Mostly those who need a reminder to choose happiness in life.

The top thing I learned is use light wisely. Light can make or break a photo or design.

The color scheme is split complementary; Red, Yellow, and Green.

Image 6- Strong lines

For my first two images, light was utilized as the main objective. The photo taken outside was metered on the sky and in photoshop I used the color selection tool to bring out the crisp whites in the sky and bring out the reds in the plants around the building. The second photo was taken under the light of a large window. In photoshop I lightened to overall color of the photo, and brought out the orange color with the color selection tool.

The next two photos utilized the focus in two different ways. The first focused on the item in the foreground, a flower. The second focused on the post it note in the background. Both of these photos were slightly edited with the Sharpen tool to enhance the clarity of the focal point.

The last two photos were all about planning for the actual shot. My lead room photo was taken on the floor next to my front door. The editing consisted of the Sharpen Tool and a change in the saturation of the photo. The sixth photo was taken of my front door, because of the strong lines in the carpet and strong lines in the door. I changed the saturation on this photo because the original had an off green tint.

This assignment helped me  realize that getting a great photo is not as easy as it looks. Planning is required to have good lines, focus, and light exposure. The point and click method can work, but taking the time to work out the wrinkles of a photo will make for a better executed shot.

COMM130 Flier

Jessie Chatterton-Flier

This is my Graduate Leadership Conference flier created for COMM130. When creating this flier I used InDesign for the first time. I learned how to format text and photo boxes, use fill color, use stroke color, and create lines. At first it was difficult but after a while, I got the hang of it. I wanted to create an eye catching flier with a clear message to catch the eye of graduates, who are the audience. The top things i learned were, to be patient when using a new program, use crisp black and white to create contrast, and printing the project multiple times is very helpful.
